How to Get Admission in MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology)

You can apply to join the institution in your final year in high school and send your grades once accepted in the institution.

If you have enrolled at another university in America or abroad, you should apply to MIT as a transfer student.

Grade and coursework

For your application to be considered, you should be able to demonstrate minimum competency in areas of study. The international students should have at least studied;

  1. English for Four years
  2. Mathematics at least Calculus level
  3. History or social studies for at least two years
  4. Biology
  5. Chemistry
  6. Physics

These courses are only meant to prepare you academically for studying at MIT. You can apply even when you haven’t studied all the classes.

Tests to Take

MIT requires you to take a qualification test which can be done in two ways.

Option 1: SAT or the ACT tests and two SAT Subject Tests: Mathematics test (level 1 or 2), and a science test (physics, chemistry, or biology e/m). SAT test is recommended for Native English speakers.

Option 2: TOEFL test (we do not accept IELTS) and two SAT Subject Tests: Mathematics test (level 1 or 2) and a science test (physics, chemistry, or biology e/m). It is recommended for students who do not speak English or have been speaking English for less than five years at home or in school.

For SAT test register at www.collegeboard.org whereas ACT tests are done at www.act.org and TOEFL tests for English as a foreign language are done at www.ets.org/toefl.

MIT Application

MIT application is done online. Follow this link my.mit.edu to create your account on MyMIT portal. If you’re new to the MyMIT portal, click register now and fill in the registration form.

Once you create the MyMIT account you can:

  1. Apply online
  2. Obtain your interviewer’s details.
  3. Track your application process and financial statements among others.

MIT Requirements for Application

  1. GPA requirements

You need to have at least a GPA of 4.13 for you to compete with other MIT applicants. Make sure you have straight A’s in your classes.

If your GPA is below 4.13, you need to have a high score in SAT or ACT tests.

To submit your application at MIT, you need to take SAT or ACT test and SAT subject test.

  1. Application requirements

If you’re a fresh student you need to submit Part 1 of Personal Information statements and part 2 where you fill short essays about yourself, academic details and other activities. You need two submit 2 recommendation letters and an application fee of $75.
